Award-winning director Robert Chuter is not a person prone to making conventional theatre and his acclaimed works such as Loving Friends, The Miracle of the Rose [Sydney & Melbourne], Lady Chatterley's Lover [Sydney, Melbourne, Perth & Adelaide], Anne of Green Gables [Melbourne & Perth], Homme Fatale [Melbourne, Perth & London], Half A Person: My Life as Told by The Smiths [Adelaide & Sydney], The Death of Peter Pan, All That I Will Ever Be, The Hive, The Object of Desire, Almost and Heights have earned him a reputation as a distinctive director.
His debut feature film 'The Dream Children' was screened at the American and European Film Markets and was premiered at the Melbourne Queer Film Festival in March 2015. The film has been accepted into the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Torino Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, Kashish 6th Mumbai G&L Film Festival and is being screened throughout the Netherlands in May.
Chuter was formerly an actor appearing in the cult film 'Salt Sweat Sperm + Saliva', 'Shut In', 'Fearless' and others. He has also produced a number of award winning shorts: 'Tax", the cult film 'Killer Zombies', 'XOS: A Cry for Help', 'Letting Go' and many more including music videos.
His innovative and sometimes controversial works in theatre, film and photography have earned him many awards and nominations. In 1990 Robert's acclaimed production of In Angel Gear at St. Martin's Theatre was awarded a Green Room Award.
Chuter is a director who is constantly testing his audience. His unique style has given audiences complex, controversial and visually stunning productions in over 250 productions in both theatre and film. He is a former student of the Victorian College of the Arts - Drama School. In 1981, he was trainee director at the QTC. He graduated from the prestigious Swinburne Film and Television School in 1983 winning the AAV Australia Award for his short film: The Mortal Coil.
He was Artistic Director of StyleAid - Transit in 1999 working with such designers as Collette Dinnigan, Giorgio Armani, Saba and Issey Miyake and was the Artistic Director of MelBorn08's Playspotting at the La Mama Courthouse. From 2012-2014 he joined the team at Chapel Off Chapel hosting 'An Afternoon With…' replacing stalwart Tony Porter.
